4 Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving

4 Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving
Christian J. Amendt

There are many ways drivers endanger themselves while on the road. Most people are familiar with the risks of drinking and driving, but there is another way many people end up in accidents: becoming distracted.

Car accidents are serious, and even ones that are not seemingly catastrophic can lead to significant health problems. Therefore, you should remain proactive in preventing distractions while in the car and share these tips with your teenager if you have one who has just started driving.

1. Do multitasking when you are not behind the wheel

Many drivers do not see the harm in doing a little multitasking while driving. Eating, applying makeup and even writing things down have all led to accidents. Instead of picking up food at the drive-thru and eating it on your way to work, take extra time out of the day to sit down and eat at the restaurant. It will be much safer, and you will not feel as stressed.

2. Let passengers do some work

If you have other people in the car, then they should help you out with certain tasks. Someone else can deal with the radio. If you absolutely must respond to a text, then you can have someone else send it for you and tell him or her what to write.

3. Do not text and drive

This is a major cause of recent car accidents. Never text while behind the wheel. You should also avoid taking phone calls on a Bluetooth device. You may still become distracted by virtue of focusing on something other than the road.

4. Do not drive when drowsy

In the event you feel tired or fatigued, you should avoid getting on the road. If you have any sleeping disorders, such as insomnia or sleep apnea, preventing you from getting a good night’s rest every night, then you need to see a doctor immediately to address it.
