How Can You Hit The Open Road Safely?

Most motorcyclists understand that they have a higher risk during a collision with a passenger vehicle. According to the NHTSA, around 5,000 bikers died in 2019 due to traffic accidents. To stay safe on the road, not only do you have to rely on other drivers watching out for you, but you have to have the appropriate gear to reduce the chance of severe or fatal injuries.

To boost your safety, prepare yourself for the road ahead.

Choose the right gear

Your helmet is your most important piece of gear. Without it, you are more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury. Look for helmets that meet the DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. You should see a DOT symbol on the back of your helmet. In addition to your helmet, cover your body with leather or denim. During a crash, your body may collide with the pavement and cause extensive road rash if you do not have protection. Additionally, wear reflective and bright clothing to stay visible.

Learn to drive defensively

One way to reduce accidents is to drive responsibly. Many motorcycle accidents occur because a driver missed a motorcycle. Take extra precautions in intersections and keep your headlights on throughout the day and night to boost your visibility. Defensive driving allows you to use safe strategies while on the road to avoid hazards. You have to learn to identify dangerous situations, so you know how to navigate them appropriately.

Before you hit the road, check your bike. Check your tire pressure, fluid levels and brakes each time you ride to avoid issues occurring while on the road.
