How To Obtain Lost Wages Compensation

If you were in a car accident that resulted in injuries, there is a good chance you missed some days, if not weeks, of work. These lost wages can add up and quickly result in financial strain.

There are various ways in which you may be able to file a claim to recover the wages that you lost. To do so, you must be able to prove the injuries were directly due to the crash.

How to file a claim

According to FindLaw, lost wages is the money you would have earned at work while you were at doctors’ appointments or at home healing. It is best to wait to file a claim until your condition is stable and your treatment is complete.

The way you file a claim depends on who caused the accident and what type of insurance you have. If the other party was at fault, you can submit the claim to his or her insurance policy. If the at-fault party did not have insurance, you can file the claim under your uninsured coverage, if you have it.

If your policy has personal injury protection, you can file the claim with your insurance no matter who was at fault. If your injuries were severe and you missed months of work, insurance coverage may not be sufficient, in which case you may want to sue the at-fault party.

What information you need to provide

With your claim, you will need to provide a doctor’s note that dictates taking time off work due to the injuries, paystubs documenting your salary or hourly wage and a letter from your employer. You will also need to provide medical documents that relate specifically to injuries due to the accident. The insurance company may also require you to have an independent medical exam.
